Recipients can unsubscribe from your list using the "Unsubscribe" link in the footer of your email campaign, or by using the unsubscribe button in their email client (if so equipped). If they use the link, they are taken to a web form that Direct Mail provides. If you would like to customize that form, you can create a custom unsubscribe form that replaces the default one. The custom form you create applies to all the contacts in your list.
Here's how to create a custom unsubscribe form:
- Navigate to the Contacts tab
- Select your list
- In the inspector, expand the Forms section
- Click the Customize button next to Unsubscribe Form
A form editor window appears. If you have created an email signup form, it should look familiar. You use the same controls to edit your unsubscribe form as you do to edit a signup form. There are a couple differences:
- Form analytics are not available for the unsubscribe form
- You can use the
[email address]
mail-merge tag in text blocks to merge in the contact's current email address - You can include links to your email preferences page
Add an Unsubscribe Survey
You can add a survey to your unsubscribe form that asks people why they chose to unsubscribe. The responses to this survey are reported in your campaign report. To add the survey to your form:
- Click the Suggestions button in the content toolbar
- Choose Unsubscribe Reason
- Click where you want to insert the survey
Suggest Updating Email Preferences
One strategy for reducing unsubscribes is to give your subscribers the option of reducing the number of emails that receive from you, instead of unsubscribing altogether. If this is an option that you have added to your email preferences page, consider adding a link to your email preferences page from your unsubscribe page:
- Click the Suggestions button in the content toolbar
- Choose Link to Update Email Preferences
- Click where you want to insert the text block
- Use the inspector to edit the text as you see fit
Cloud Required
Your project must be saved in the cloud in order to use custom unsubscribe forms. Projects not in the cloud will use the default form.
Revert to the Default Form
If you no longer need a customized unsubscribe form, you can delete it:
- Navigate to the Contacts tab
- Select your list
- In the inspector, expand the Forms section
- Click the Trash button next to Unsubscribe Form
